Overcoming the fear of starting over

How to Overcome the Fear of Starting Over After Leaving Corporate America | E83

Stream on:

Why Is Starting Over So Scary?

I left my corporate job after 6 years. I knew after 3 that that place was not meant for me. But I was too scared to make a move. The nerves, anxiety, and self doubt that come with trying something new, whether that’s stepping onto an open mic stage or making a major career shift. The fear of starting over is real, and it’s usually tied to wanting to appear perfect or worrying about looking “cringe” to others.

The Comfort Trap

Fear of the unknown seemed scarier than staying stuck. But that safety was just an illusion. The security isn’t worth your unhappiness. Staying in a place where you know you don’t want to be slowly sucks your soul. True growth happens when we step out into discomfort.

Embracing Failure and Community

Failure is part of growth, even though it’s rarely encouraged in corporate workspaces. We’ve been taught to avoid failure, but when we fail at something, it shows us a lot about ourselves. What we care about. The biggest breakthroughs happen when I embrace the supportive communities around me and stop worrying about the negative opinions.

Take One Step Forward

What’s one thing you’ve wanted to do but felt was too embarrassing or scary? Something that you’ve wanted to try, but just been too afraid of. Take a small step toward it today. No one’s paying as much attention as you think, and every little action builds progress. Don’t forget to be kind to yourself in the process.

If you need some help in being kinder to yourself and more self-supportive, I’ve made a free 7 day guide to help you with that.
