Navigating Burnout and Embracing Sustainability

Burnout is a topic we tend to associate with desk jobs, soul-crushing careers, or doing things we dislike. But what happens when burnout sneaks into something we genuinely love? In episode 66 of the Working Towards Our Purpose podcast, we talk about sustainability and burnout when you’re launching a creative project, building a business, or just trying to keep your passion alive.

The First Step to Sustainability

A recent therapy session helped me recognize that I was experiencing some early signs of burnout. Burnout can feel like: low energy, frustration with the productiveness, and even physical tension. I’ve always assonated burnout with a job that I hated, but as I started talking about how I’ve been feeling, I realized that I might be feeling burnt out. Which came as a surprise to me because I’m doing something that I love. I realized this was true because when we were talking, the tension suddenly lifted from my chest. Acknowledging the burnout, for me, was a first step towards relief.

This brings me to the idea of sustainability. Even if you are doing something that you love, finding sustainability is key to being able to keep pursuing it. Which brings me to a quote I scrolled upon recently.

Wisdom from Nipsey Hussle

A quote from rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle, who attributes his success to perseverance: “I just didn’t quit. That’s only distinguishing quality from me and probably anyone else going through this.” Signifying the importance of not giving up what you believe in. Avoiding burnout will help sustain your passion.

Recognizing the Signs of Burnout

Here are some of the warning signs of burnout so you can catch it before it overcomes you:

  • Decreasing enjoyment: Tasks that once were fun now feel annoying, and you don’t seem to find the same joy with them you once had.

  • Low energy and inefficiency: Work takes longer to accomplish, and more effort.

  • Self-criticism: Inner dialogue becomes harsher, especially when goals aren’t met.

  • Physical symptoms: Tension, in the chest, shoulders, and jaw can be a warning indicator.

Tuning into both emotional and physical cues can help you realize burnout. Your feelings are information, and listening to what they tell you can help you realize something is wrong. Catching burnout early makes it easier to address and avoid quitting something altogether.

Strategies to Prevent Burnout and Sustain Purpose

Here are some concrete ways that have helped me avoid burnout, even as workload and ambition grow:

1. Celebrate Your Wins
Often, we leap from one goal to the next without pausing. Whether you’ve published 66 podcast episodes or received a new subscriber on YouTube, acknowledging your achievements help to refill your motivational tank. Take a moment and recognize that you’ve accomplished something.

2. Schedule Time Off
Intentional rest isn’t laziness, it’s strategy. Even if it feels unnatural, block out real, whole days to put work aside and recharge.

3. Meditate and Tune In Physically
Regular meditation and body check-ins can highlight tension and stress early. Sitting quietly, even for just 10 minutes, can help you hear signals your body is sending and help you process what’s underneath.

4. Inject Fun into the Process
Find small rituals or routines that give you joy. Is there something you can add into your routine that can be fun? For me, I just added listening to one good song before recording my podcast, to bring lightness and energy into my work. Look for creative ways to inject fun into tasks that might otherwise seem routine.

Visualize Your Burnout Meter

Burnout isn’t a switch, it’s more like a gas gauge on a car. Are you feeling full or heading towards empty? Recognizing your level allows you to refuel before you run out.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Some advice from my father: “Work smarter, not harder.” Sustainability means finding repeatable, healthy rhythms, not pushing yourself until you break, even in pursuit of your dreams.

If you’re building something important, something you care deeply about, devote energy to making it last. Burnout may start to come up, but you can address it, and take care of it before it make you give something important up. Keep your purpose alive through self-awareness, celebration, rest, and a touch of fun.
