Fueling Your Purpose: The Power of Following Your Joy

Discover how pursuing what excites you can unlock your energy, attract your community, and move you closer to your purpose—no matter where you begin.

What Does It Mean to “Follow Your Joy”?

“Follow your joy” can feel like one of those phrases you’d see on a poster, but in this episode we are going to go deeper and really break down this phrase. Joy is a surge of excitement, passion, and engagement that transforms how we interact and move through the world. Whether it’s talking energetically about a favorite band or diving deep into a hands-on project, joy sparks visible change in our demeanor and energy.

When I was in college days, I was hesitantly considering joining my school’s FSAE team, (club to build a race car) but was concerned about the time commitment along with going through engineering school. Ultimately I chose to go for it and found the experience so energizing that the concerns of having too much on my plate melted away. The result wasn’t just academic success, but more focus, friendship, and unforgettable experiences. Joy isn’t a distraction, but fuel.

Should I monetize my Joy?

I want to dispel the myth that joy has to be lucrative to be worth pursuing. You hear it all the time, turn your passion into a business, and I’m not against that, unless it stops you from that joy. Some passions, like music for me, may never lead to financial gain, but still deserve space in our lives because they replenish our energy and positively impact all other areas of our lives.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking hobbies are only valuable if they make money. Instead, I encourage you to pursue what brings joy regardless of monetization. Sometimes, these passions bring balance to a stressful work life or ignite motivation when everything else feels stagnant. The act of making space for what you love is a declaration of agency and control over your life, no matter your circumstances.

Turning Passion into Action

Thinking about joy isn’t enough so let’s translate this joy into real action. Action is what moves us forward, builds momentum, and brings clarity. Here are some suggestions for a tangible way to begin:

  • If you love reading and writing, start with platforms like Substack where you can share your thoughts, connect with others, and find your voice.

  • If music excites you, make time to play with others or create something on your own.

  • If you’re drawn to visual arts maybe video creation is for you. YouTube offers a space for sharing your work with a super low barrier to entry.

Join a local sports leagues, creative groups, or any shared interest community can become springboards for joy in action.

The key is to begin where you are. Taking small, concrete steps transforms interests into real experiences that shape your journey.

Attracting Your Tribe Through Joy

A beautiful, often overlooked benefit of following your joy is how naturally it attracts like-minded people. When you’re passionate about something, weather sharing or participating in it, you draw others who resonate with your enthusiasm. An example for me is meeting people at a concert, where the shared passion for the music forms an instant, authentic connection. Try it next time you’re at a show. These relationships of like-mindedness can fuel growth, open new doors, and offer the support needed to stay motivated.

Your Potential is Endless

The thing about following your joy, is that the possibilities are endless. You never know what you will find down a path lead with joy. Also, there is no wrong choice. Joy can, and will, evolve. What excites you now might change in a year, and that’s totally okay. You’re allowed to change your mind. As you pursue one passion, you gain insights that may lead you to new interests and opportunities. The process is ever evolving, and each step moves you closer to a more purposeful, joyful life. Stay open, be kind to yourself, and honor your joy on your path towards purpose.
