Feeling Lost?

Do you want out of corporate America, but have no idea where to go? Unsure of what you would want to do, but you know it’s not staying in this place? I know that feeling firsthand and how overwhelming it can be. Looking back in the 5 years since I left corporate, I think there’s 3 strategies that really helped me with that transition out of corporate America.

The Biggest Reason We Feel Stuck

It’s easy to think everyone else has it all figured out. But so many of us end up in jobs that don’t fit, just following what we’re “supposed” to do instead of what we want or feel called to do. It’s normal to feel lost, and just realizing that you want something different is the first meaningful step towards change. A lot of us don’t have it all figured out.

Strategies That Helped Me Exit Corporate America

If you feel like you have no idea what would you would do if you left your corporate career, try starting with these 3 strategies:

  1. Skills Dump: Get a piece of paper and write down anything you enjoy, any skills you have, things that energizes you, what people have asked you for help with, and your strengths. Even if it all seems random. Just put it all down on paper and then take a look at it. Sometimes you need to see what you are capable of and know that you are more than just the one job you have right now. Skills are transferable. By paying attention to what excites you, this can help inspire a new direction forward.

  2. Find Support: Connect with people and groups for accountability who can encourage you to be yourself and chase after the thing that you desire. It’s scary to leave a corporate job and make a career change, but a good support system can make it a little easier.

  3. Take One Small Action: I’m a huge believer in momentum. One small step, turns into another, turns into progress, and over time turns into big change. But you have to start. Start tiny, with one small step forward so that you can create momentum you can build on. The sooner the better. What can you do today?

Be Patient and Kind to Yourself

It took me a lots of trial and error to figure out what works for me. One decision won’t always be right, but you will learn from each step, getting you closer to your truth. It’s necessary to give yourself permission to not have all the answers right away, and to be kind to yourself. It’s so easy to be harsh and critical of yourself but being kind and supportive is what you really need to make yourself feel safe to enough to take a risk.

If you need some help in being kinder to yourself and more self-supportive, I’ve made a free 7 day guide to help you with that.
