How to Get Out of The Comparison Trap: A Perspective Change | E69

One Way to Escape the Comparison Trap

Today, I want to share a quick story and insight that really helped me break free from that all-too-familiar feeling of comparing myself to others. This is something so many of us deal with, especially when we’re scrolling through social media or trying to build something of our own.

This morning, I found myself slipping into comparison after seeing another creator on Substack who seemed to have it all figured out. I started telling myself stories about how far ahead they were and how I was “less than.” Instantly, it made me feel discouraged and stuck.

But then, I remembered to turn to my journal. I started jotting down how I was feeling, and getting my thoughts on paper when it sparked a perspective shift. Instead of seeing others as “better,” I imagined we’re all just at different places along the same path. Like being in different grades at school. Some are in 4th grade, some are in 3rd grade, and nobody’s better or worse, it’s just where we are at the moment.

This shift allowed me to view people further along as encouragement rather than threatening. I could use their experience as a chance to learn from, instead of resenting them. It also reminded me: that not everyone is for me, some people I will vibe with and learn from, but not everyone; and that’s perfectly okay.

So when you catch yourself comparing, try visualizing your own spot in your journey. You’re right where you need to be. Look for inspiration, not jealousy, and remember, we all need someone to look up to and someone to help along the way.

Let me know how you escape the comparison trap in the comments!
