Breaking Down Purpose: Wrestling with the Big Questions
Purpose isn’t an abstract, one-size-fits-all concept. Instead, it’s an inner voice—a longing, a restlessness, or a pull toward something more. In this episode I recount my own trajectory: from feeling unfulfilled at my 9-5 in corporate America, trying entrepreneurship, to exploring various unconventional jobs. My journey so far was less about finding the perfect career and more about searching for work that resonated on a deeper level, and following that path to see what I learned along the way.
The Influence of Others: Inspiration and Evolving Perceptions
Leaving the corporate world introduced me to a diverse array of people, like entrepreneurs, artists, and those forging their own paths. Interacting with these individuals opened my eyes to alternative ways of life and inspired me to a sense of possibility. These connections helped plant the seeds for this podcast creating a platform to learn from others who seemed to embody a sense of purpose and to share those stories.
It’s important to note that my understanding of purpose has changed over time. Initially, I saw it as a fixed point or a singular calling. Now, through conversations and personal reflection, I realize that purpose is subjective and evolving. What resonates for one person may not for another.
Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Insight: Discovering Dharma
I recently read The Great Work of Your Life by Stephen Cope, which was inspired by the ancient Hindu text the Bhagavad Gita. I loved this book and it offered a new lens through which to view purpose. In both these texts, the concept of “Dharma” emerges, not just as a synonym for purpose, but as a complex, deeply individual duty or calling unique to each person.
Learning more about Dharma was both clarifying and validating for me, as it articulated my own feelings of the longing, the search, the frustration, in a relatable framework. Dharma, as Cope describes it, isn’t always clear or easy, but it’s central to living a life of meaning. Cope’s idea that our suffering and struggle is all for something positive that can bear fruit for the world, when aligned with our Dharma, is a particularly powerful message.

Embracing the Struggle: Meaning in the Journey
On the podcast I read a short passage from Cope’s book, emphasizing that while life can’t shield us from suffering, Dharma (or purpose) redeems that suffering by making it meaningful and fruitful. This perspective transforms obstacles from sources of frustration into opportunities for growth and contribution. You’ll have to tune into the podcast to get the full quote.
An Invitation: Reflecting on Your Own Purpose
I end this episode with a call to action, where I ask listeners, “Do you feel a similar pull toward something more? Do you experience an inner voice or longing for deeper meaning?” By sharing my own uncertainties and discoveries, I hopes to open a space for others to reflect and connect on this idea of purpose.
