Setting Goals That Work: Strategies for a Purpose-Driven Life
On episode 42 of “Working Towards Our Purpose,” I share a fresh, practical approach to goal-setting that goes beyond wishful thinking and lands squarely in the territory of genuine accomplishment.
Introduction: Rethinking the Purpose of Goals
If you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution only to forget about it by spring, you’re not alone. I get personal about my own history of abandoned goals and share how a shift in approach has reignited my excitement about the future. This isn’t about trendy vision boards or hustle culture platitudes, instead, it’s about working with intention, honesty, and practicality to create goals that energize instead of overwhelm.
#1 Take the Ego Out of Your Goals
One of the episode’s core insights is the importance of stripping ego from the goal-setting process. I talk about my long-held dream of owning a music studio, a goal that felt right because that’s what people who love to make music do. But when I examined what I really wanted, it was simply to make music with people he loves and admires. A brick-and-mortar studio wasn’t essential to that pursuit. Letting go of that “ego goal” was freeing, clarifying what actually brings me joy about the goal of music. I encourage listeners to dig beneath the surface of their ambitions and ask: Is this truly for me, or an idea of what I should want? Honest introspection leads to goals tailored around authentic desires, not societal scripts or outdated dreams.
#2 Start Now (Even If It’s Small)
The next strategy sounds obvious but requires a shift in mindset. Don’t wait for the stars to align before you start. I shares how, in the past, I’d set annual goals with no real intention to start them until “the right time.” Unsurprisingly, most never got off the ground. The difference-maker? Initiate your goals and start them immediately, even if it’s just a baby step. By beginning today, even in the smallest, low-pressure way, you start building momentum and integrate the goal into your daily life. Waiting breeds procrastination; action breeds progress.
#3 Refine and Revisit
Many of us treat goals as set-and-forget tasks. A once-yearly ritual that gets ignored until December rolls around again. I make the case for regularly refining and revising your goals. After a month of working towards your goals, revisit the list and filter out what no longer feels meaningful. The process of checking in and being honest about what’s working (and what isn’t) is just as crucial as the initial act of setting the goal. Don’t be afraid to let go of an ambition that’s lost its spark or to adjust priorities as your circumstances and passions shift. Goals that evolve with you are more motivating and realistic.
#4 Get Specific
One additional insight that emerged organically while recording the episode: specificity is your secret weapon. I credit my recent burst of musical productivity, writing, recording, and releasing a new single each month, to getting incredibly detailed about what needed to happen and when. Vague goals are easy to ignore, but clear and specific goals turn an abstract hope into a real progress. Think granular: what, when, how, and with whom? The clearer your pathway, the fewer decisions (and distractions) you’ll face on your journey.
Speaking Goals Into Existence
At the end of the episode, I speak my own goals allowed, and I encourage you to do the same. Leave a comment telling my what your goals are. By naming these out loud, we’re not just holding ourselves accountable, but also others who are reading this article. Articulating and refining our dreams in community can give them even more power and momentum.
