The Bee and the Bush: Inspiration from Everyday Moments
Sometimes the biggest changes in our lives are inspired by the smallest moments. In episode 40 of Working Towards Our Purpose Podcast, I start with a story about an ordinary walk that sparked a new perspective. While admiring a flowering bush, I noticed a bee busily pollinating. As I admired how hard that bee had been working, I realized the bee doesn’t pause to consider how its work is essential to the world. It simply does what comes naturally, contributing to a larger ecosystem that we as humans depend upon.
I realized this insight is a metaphor for how we pursue our own purposes. What if, instead of overthinking and planning endlessly, we just started doing what feels right in the present, however small that action may be?
Step One: Find the Easiest Way In
Change feels overwhelming when we focus on the whole mountain instead of the first step. If you can break down your intimidating goal into the simplest, lowest-pressure possible action, it becomes easier to start.
This principle applies everywhere. If something seems impossible, ask yourself, what is so easy I can do it today, even if it feels unrelated or tiny? Momentum, once started, has a way of building.
Step Two: Stay in the Present
The present moment is where all real change happens. It’s far too easy to compare ourselves to experts or future versions of ourselves, which can lead to anxiety or inaction. You don’t need to build an entire coaching business or become a professional musician overnight. Instead, focus on what you can do right now, today, to inch closer to your goal. Try to ignore the pressure to have it all figured out and instead ask, “What’s my next step, right now?”
Step Three: Don’t Go It Alone. Get a Buddy
Even the most self-motivated people struggle with consistency. That’s why my third piece of advice is so powerful: find an accountability buddy. This doesn’t need to be a lifelong friend; it could even be a stranger who shares your goals. The key is regular check-ins. Weekly chats to share wins, setbacks, and dreams.
My own experience proves this to be true. Years ago I met a new friend in a business class. We thought the class wasn’t much help but afterward met weekly for years, supporting each other’s progress. On days when you’re unmotivated, showing up for a friend can be the push you need to keep moving. An accountable buddies encouragement can be the extra motivation you need to keep going.
One Simple Step Forward
Change doesn’t come from grand plans or waiting until you’re ready. It comes from real, messy, humble first steps, no matter how small. Focus on what you can do right now, embrace support from others. Start your journey with the smallest, most obtainable action, and let purpose unfold one step at a time.
